Remove Cat Urine Smell With These Tips

While most smell problems are limited to the small area of the kitty litter box, there are exceptions. Cats who refuse to use their litter boxes pose a lot of problems for their owners, especially given their concentrated, enzyme-filled, ammonia-laced urine. Sadly, the process to remove cat urine is a complicated matter. Cat urine is different from other urine in that the smell can linger even after scrubbing the urine away with the best cleaners. This is because of the urea crystals, enzymes, ammonia, and bacteria in the urine. In this article, several general tips on how to remove cat urine are presented.

The most obvious option to stop your kitty from peeing just anywhere she wants is to keep her litter box clean, as your cat will definitely be averse to using a dirty litter box. If this doesn't solve the problem, you may want to consider the possibility that your cat could be the victim of feline urinary tract infection. When this happens, cats, being fairly simple animals, tend to associate the pain of their peeing with the place they pee. As a result, they no longer see their litter boxes as a place to relieve themselves. Instead, they are actually threatened by their kitty litter box. Moaning in agony during urination, frequent small strained urinations, and bloody pee are common symptoms of feline urinary tract infection. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you see these signs in your cat.

Another way to remove cat urine problems is to have your cat neutered in order to minimize their territorial tendencies. This, of course, is not an option for breeders. Otherwise, however, this solution could very well help stop your cat from feeling the urge to mark her territory by peeing all over your furniture.

Anxious and stressed cats also tend to urinate everywhere, so figure out the cause of stress and have your cat using the litter box again in no time. If your cat is just plain stubborn, buying synthetic pheromones from your nearby pet store will help you direct your cat as to where to pee. As an added bonus, you are assured that your cats will be able to smell the pheromones but you won't.

If you absolutely and ultimately cannot make your cat use her litter box, to remove cat urine smell when it's already in place becomes your only option. A well-known home remedy for cat pee stains includes blotting up the urine, dousing it with vinegar, leaving baking soda on it, letting it dry, and then vacuuming it up. For washables, the easiest way to remove cat urine is to add some apple cider vinegar to the item to be laundered. If all else fails, most pet stores sell cleaners designed specifically to remove cat urine.
