Remove Cat Urine Smell With These Tips

While most smell problems are limited to the small area of the kitty litter box, there are exceptions. Cats who refuse to use their litter boxes pose a lot of problems for their owners, especially given their concentrated, enzyme-filled, ammonia-laced urine. Sadly, the process to remove cat urine is a complicated matter. Cat urine is different from other urine in that the smell can linger even after scrubbing the urine away with the best cleaners. This is because of the urea crystals, enzymes, ammonia, and bacteria in the urine. In this article, several general tips on how to remove cat urine are presented.

The most obvious option to stop your kitty from peeing just anywhere she wants is to keep her litter box clean, as your cat will definitely be averse to using a dirty litter box. If this doesn't solve the problem, you may want to consider the possibility that your cat could be the victim of feline urinary tract infection. When this happens, cats, being fairly simple animals, tend to associate the pain of their peeing with the place they pee. As a result, they no longer see their litter boxes as a place to relieve themselves. Instead, they are actually threatened by their kitty litter box. Moaning in agony during urination, frequent small strained urinations, and bloody pee are common symptoms of feline urinary tract infection. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you see these signs in your cat.

Another way to remove cat urine problems is to have your cat neutered in order to minimize their territorial tendencies. This, of course, is not an option for breeders. Otherwise, however, this solution could very well help stop your cat from feeling the urge to mark her territory by peeing all over your furniture.

Anxious and stressed cats also tend to urinate everywhere, so figure out the cause of stress and have your cat using the litter box again in no time. If your cat is just plain stubborn, buying synthetic pheromones from your nearby pet store will help you direct your cat as to where to pee. As an added bonus, you are assured that your cats will be able to smell the pheromones but you won't.

If you absolutely and ultimately cannot make your cat use her litter box, to remove cat urine smell when it's already in place becomes your only option. A well-known home remedy for cat pee stains includes blotting up the urine, dousing it with vinegar, leaving baking soda on it, letting it dry, and then vacuuming it up. For washables, the easiest way to remove cat urine is to add some apple cider vinegar to the item to be laundered. If all else fails, most pet stores sell cleaners designed specifically to remove cat urine.

Cat Pictures Ezine Articles

Cat Pictures Ezine Articles
So your cat is just the cutest and the smartest thing on the block right?
We all think our cat should be on the Funniest Animal Videos show. But alas... not everyone's cat can be on television. But maybe you've got some great photographs of your feline friend doing his or her kitty thing and you'd like to put them on a t-shirt so everyone else can appreciate how cute your cat is. A few years ago your options would have been pretty limited. You could take your photos to your local silk screening company, where after set up fees, screen charges, and minimum print requirements, you might end up spending a couple of hundred dollars and have a box full of a few dozen shirts with your cat's picture on them. Sure...you could give one to each of your friends as gifts, but do they all think your cat is as cute as you do?
Another option would be to go the iron-on route. This involved uploading your picture to your computer, printing it out on special t-shirt heat transfer paper, and then ironing it onto a shirt. The results left much to be desired. Starting with several attempts to get the photo to print correctly on the special paper, remembering to print it in reverse so when you ironed it on, it would come out right. Then several tries at getting the pressure and temperature right in the ironing process, usually ruining a couple of shirts in the process. Only to discover that the first time you wash your shirt, the beautiful photo of your kitty has faded, cracked and started to peel!
Well thanks to digital printing technology there is a better way. Print On Demand companies, or "PODs" like Cafepress offer the ability to easily and inexpensively print your photos on t-shirts.
So how do you get your picture onto a t-shirt using Print-On-Demand?
Open a free account at a POD.
Start with a high resolution (200 dpi or more) photo, drawing or cartoon and size it accordingly for the item you will have it printed on. Most PODs will offer easy sizing templates to use so your image will fit just right on whatever item you choose.
Upload your image to your account. You will be given a Media Basket area to store your photos.
Pick which items your want your photo on. You will be offered choices of apparel size, color, printing on front or back etc.
Place your order, and voila! your beautiful creation will arrive at your door in about a week. No fuss, no muss.

Veterinary Information for Cats

Veterinary Information for Cats
Our cat Pepper hates going to the vet. Studies have shown that cat owners take their cats to the vet only half as often as taking their dogs. A 2006 study showed that more than one-third of domesticated cats did not go to the vet at all. This may be due in part to the fact that cats are less overt and obvious about how they feel, so often we humans don't realize our cat needs to go to the vet when they really do. For this reason, many veterinarians are recommending cats be brought in twice a year for wellness checks.
Another reason cats aren't brought in as often as they should be is the dreaded cat carrier. If the cat carrier is used only for the purpose of taking your cat to the vet, then you may have a tough time getting your cat into their cat carrier. As soon as they hear the cat carrier coming or see it brought inside, many will bolt ... and good luck catching them! Some will cling so tightly to your neck that you literally have to pry them off of you and push them into the carrier.
Try to socialize your cat to their cat carrier early in their life. Put the carrier inside where they can go in and out freely. Then put them inside the carrier and take them for a ride in the car without going to the vet. You'll get them used to riding in the car, another thing Pepper doesn't enjoy, and you won't have such an ordeal when you really do need to go to the vet.
We take Pepper in at least annually to the vet and sometimes twice. We don't want her to suffer needlessly just because we humans aren't recognizing any symptoms. Please be sure to have regular vet appointments for your cat, even if they're not exhibiting any illness.

Cat Care: How to Take Care of a Cat

Cat Care: How to Take Care of a Cat
To prevent your cat from digging in the dirt around your houseplants, go to your local craft store and buy a few pieces of the plastic needlepoint mesh. Cut it to fit the pot, with a slit and an opening for the plant. Place it on top of the dirt. Or, dampen a cotton ball with oil of clove, then bury the cotton ball just below the surface.

To stop him from chewing on houseplants, you can buy Bitter Apple from your local pet store and spray it on the leaves. Here is a list of plants that are toxic to your cat.

To keep cats out of the garden, pour 2 quarts of water into a large watering can and add 5 tablespoons flour, 4 tablespoons dry mustard, 3 tablespoons cayenne pepper, and 2 tablespoons chili powder. Mix it and sprinkle it around flowers and bulbs. [Debbie Panter, Hornell, NY]

Chewing on Electrical Cords

Coating the cord with a pasty mixture of cayenne pepper, hot pepper sauce, nail-biting nail polish, or orange/lemon peel seems to work in most cases. A better solution might be to put the cords into a cardboard tube, which has the added advantage of keeping them all in one organized bundle. You can purchase mailing tubes, or simply save the cardboard tubes from your wrapping paper. If it's ugly, cover with Contac paper.

Your Cat and the Curtains

Cats like to climb. You may end up doing both of you a favor if you simply put blinds or roll-up shades at the window so the cat won't be tempted to shred or climb any curtains. We use vertical blinds here, since the cats can just push them aside to get to the window sill. You might want to review the information on window curtain safety as well as the available window covering options at the Window Improvements website.
For safety sake, make sure that the pull-cord is not a loop; cut it so there are two strings so neither your cat nor your child will inadvertently get it caught around their neck.

If you must have curtains, you could try installing tension rods that will fall down (frightening, not hurting) the cat when they climb.

CatStuff: Cat Information, Graphics, and More
So,you've decided that you want to have a pet cat. However, before you shop for your kitten, you may need to consider a few important things. After all, finding out that a cat is not for you after you've already grown attached can be heart breaking.
The main reason that people have to find their cats new homes is that they are allergic to cats. If you've never spent much time around cats, be sure you can spend a few hours in a home with cats without developing an allergy attack. Also, check with friends and family to be sure none of them are highly allergic. Try to gather as much cat information as possible.
Next, you may want to consider your lifestyle. Although most cats need less interaction than dogs, your cat can still become lonely and bored if left alone all day. A bored cat is often a bad cat. If you work long hours, consider getting two kittens so that they can keep each other company.
Don't forget to take a look at your home and be sure you can fit in a cat and all of his accessories. Cats need litter boxes, food dishes, toys, and a scratching post. If you have children, the litter box will need to be placed in a place that your children can't get to, but that your cat can access easily.
Once you have the information and you decide that a cat will fit into your household, you will need to decide whether you want a kitten or an older cat. Most people take one look at that cute, fluffy kitten and fall in love. Since kittens have not developed bad habits, a kitten is the perfect choice for people who have time to litter box train their new pet. Most kittens have not yet been altered or declawed and must receive a series of immunizations to protect them from infectious cat diseases. Older cats are a good choice for people who want a slightly less energetic pet and do not have time to train their cats to use the litter box. Most older pet cats have already been altered and will only need to take booster vaccinations.
Now that you know whether you want a cat or a kitten, you will need to find out where to buy your new cat. If you just want a great pet and aren't concerned with owning a specific breed, the best place to look is your local humane society or animal rescue. These organizations are usually overrun with healthy, sweet cats and kittens. If you are looking for a specific cat breed instead, a cat show can be a wonderful resource. Many exhibitors bring along a few kittens that are for sale. Even if you can't find kittens of the breed you are looking for at the show, you can ask exhibitors to place you on a waiting list for one of their kittens.

Blue cats

Russian Blue
The Russian Blue is a natural breed thought to have originated in northern Russia. An old name for the cat is the Archangel Cat, because it is thought to have come from the port city of Archangelsk.
Much of the breed's early history is not known. The first Russian Blues were imported to England in 1890. World War II nearly ended this breed's existence, like so many other breeds in England, and Siamese had to be used to broaden the gene pool. As a result, it took years of careful breeding to restore the Russian Blue's plush coat. The first Russian Blue appeared in the stud books of CFA in 1949, from cats who had been imported to the United States in 1947, but no Russian Blue achieved a Grand Champion title until fifteen years later.
Russian Blues are noted for its short, plush, silvery blue coat, brilliant green eyes, and semi-foreign body type with long legs and body. This is a graceful, playful breed with a quiet, somewhat shy temperament. They are generally reserved with strangers, but fiercely loyal with family.
Some Russian Blues are born with "ghost stripes" as kittens, but these generally fade with age to the familiar, solid silvery blue of adulthood.
The American and European types have come to differ somewhat; traditional Scandanavian-type Russian Blues tend to be larger and more heavily built than American Russian Blues. Australian and New Zealand associations accept different colors (see Associations).

My little Callie rumpy manx

my little Callie rumpy manx
When you picture a cat in your mind, the animal probably has a long, gracefully tapering tail. However, one cat breed actually has no tail at all, the Manx cat. While tailless Manx cats are the only type of cat seen in the show ring, you can also find cats known as stumpies or tailies. These cats make wonderful pets, but are disqualified from the show ring because they are not tailless.
The Manx cat is a very historical breed that was first established before the seventeen hundreds on the Isle of Man. Because this cat has longer back legs than front legs, it walks with an unusual gait that many people say looks very much like a bunny hop. When these cats stand still, they hold their back legs bent so that their backs are still fairly straight. Despite its small, very rounded body, the Manx is still solidly built and the breed weighs in at a respectable eight to twelve pounds. This breed’s head is wide and slightly rounded, with prominent cheeks. This cat’s long ears are slightly rounded at the tips and its gold or amber eyes are very round. These unique cats comes in almost every color and pattern available, just like its close relative, the British Shorthair.
Although the Manx is a quiet, occasional placid cat breed, this cat still has a very sweet and playful nature. The gentle attitude of this breed makes it an ideal choice for families, but these cats are also a good choice for career oriented individuals who aren’t home for long periods of time. Although these cats don’t dislike other cats, they don’t need the company of cats to feel contented.
Children enjoy the playful nature of the Manx, which, despite its legs of different lengths, can leap higher than most other breeds. It is quite common for these cats to perch on top of doorways and refrigerators. Many people comment on the dog like traits of this breed. The Manx will actually bury or hide its favorite toys, just as a dog does. You can easily teach your cat to fetch, come when he is called, or other simple tricks.
If you live in an apartment and are concerned that a cat will disturb your neighbors, the quiet little Manx is an ideal choice. These cats can mewl, but usually choose not to.
This cat breed has both longhair and shorthair coats. The shorthair’s coat is fairly thick, but very little grooming is necessary. The longhair has a silky coat that requires very little grooming, as well. Simply brushing through your Manx’s coat once a week should be enough to keep him looking tidy. You should also accustom your cat to having his teeth brushed as a kitten, so you can control tartar and tooth decay as he ages.

Cat Health Information from the Winn Feline Foundation

Cat Health Information from the Winn Feline Foundation
Prevention is always better than cure - and your cat's health is no exception. That means understanding what to look out for and conducting regular home check ups. Every month you should examine your cat carefully for early signs of illness. Just remember that some cats are very good at hiding illness or pain, so you need to be vigilant. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact your vet.
Health check list
Body condition - you should just be able to feel, but not see, your cat's ribs. Your cat should have a recognisable waistline and a distinct tummy tuck. Watch for signs of unusual weight loss or gain.
Ears - these should be clear of any thick brown or black wax and have no smell. For thinly-haired cats or cats with white-tipped ears, consider using sunscreen lotion to prevent sunburn (which in turn can lead to skin cancer).
Eyes - should be bright and clear, with no redness, discharge or apparent soreness. Your cat should not shy away from light as if it hurts the eyes.
Nose - your cat's nose is usually soft and damp to the touch. Nostrils should be free of discharge or crusting.
Mouth - teeth should be white with no excess tartar, with pale pink or black gums. Look out for dropping food, excess salivation, clawing at the mouth or bad breath as a sign of dental problems.
Skin and coat - skin can be pink or black, depending on the pigments normally found in your cat's skin. There should be no dandruff, fleas, bald patches or sores, and the coat should be thick and shiny, with no broken hairs.
Nails - should be smooth and, if you have an indoor cat, clipped regularly to prevent ingrowing.
Digestion - occasional vomiting of hair or grass can be normal. But persistent sickness or choking when eating should be checked out. Make sure your cat's stools are normal in colour and consistency, with no diarrhoea or constipation.
Thirst - healthy cats don't appear drink that much, particularly when they eat wet food due to its high moisture content. Outdoor cats will often find liquids away from home. But always have a large bowl of fresh, clean water available, and, in the case of any sharp increase in water intake, consult your vet.
Attitude - cats that feel unwell often shy away from human contact, or act aggressively. Keep a close eye on things, as cats are very good at hiding illness.

Urinary Tract Infection in Cats and Dogs

Urinary Tract Infection in Cats and Dogs Bacterial infection is a common cause of urinary tract infection. When bacteria enter the urinary tract through urethra and multiply in the bladder, it can lead to UTI. It is more common in female cats and dogs, because of a shorter urinary tract and weaker sphincter muscles. Generally, cats are more prone to UTI than dogs. Causes of Urinary Tract Infection in Cats and Dogs Urinary tract infection in cats and dogs is mainly caused by the bacteria, Escherichia coli. Other causative agents are Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas, Enterococcus and Klebsiella. Bladder tumor, bladder cancer and abnormalities of the urinary tract can increase the risk of urinary tract infection. Kidney stone causes a blockage of urinary tract, leading to infection. According to some researchers, urinary tract infection in cats and dogs is associated with their diet. Commercial dry pet foods may be contaminated with bacteria, which can cause infection. Inadequate food storage and unhealthy feeding practices can lead to multiplication of E. coli. Symptoms of UTI in Cats and Dogs There are two types of urinary tract infection in cats and dogs such as upper urinary tract infection and lower urinary tract infection. Upper urinary tract infection causes the symptoms such as vomiting, weight loss and anorexia. The signs and symptoms of lower urinary tract infection are related to abnormalities in urination. This includes trouble and extreme pain during urinating. The frequency of urination is increased. There is straining while urinating and localized pain. The urine is cloudy and foul smelling. There may be a presence of blood in the urine (hematuria). Some other symptoms of UTI are tender lower abdominal area, fever, fatigue, lethargy and loss of appetite. When you notice these symptoms in your pet, you should immediately take it to the veterinarian. Diagnosis of UTI in Cats and Dogs The diagnosis of UTI in cats and dogs is done with the help of physical examination, medical history and symptoms. The veterinarian performs a thorough physical examination including palpation of abdomen. The medical history includes the questions about reproductive status of your pet, water consumption, previous medications, illness or changes in urination. Urinalysis is done to determine the presence of bacteria, red blood cells, white blood cells and crystals. Excessively alkaline urine indicates the possibility of UTI. Culture and sensitivity of urine is performed to identify the causative agent. Treatment of UTI in Cats and Dogs Urinary tract infection in cats and dogs is treated with a course of antibiotics. In case of severe infections or persistent urinary tract infections, catheterization or surgery may be required. UTI in cats and dogs can be treated with some herbal remedies. Goldenrod Horsetail compound is the herbal tincture, which can help to soothe the irritating symptoms of UTI. Some other herbs used for UTI treatment are Uva Ursi, Berberine, Cranberry and Ester-C. These herbs help to reduce inflammation and manage the symptoms.

Cat Toys: Best Toys for Cats and Kitten Toys at PETCO

Cat Toys: Best Toys for Cats & Kitten Toys at PETCO

Although cats generally have different play styles than their canine counterparts, toys are as much a necessity for cats as they are for dogs. Toys help fight boredom and give cats an outlet for their instinctive prey-chasing behaviors. And when you are the one moving the toy around while your cat fishes for it, chases after it, or jumps in pursuit of it, playtime becomes a bonding experience for you and your cat.
"Safe" Toys
Our mothers always told us "no playing ball in the house," but cats can usually participate in that forbidden exercise without knocking down a vase or a lamp (and being grounded for two weeks). Still, there are plenty of factors that may contribute to the safety of the toy they're batting around.
Animal Care Professionals:
Print and customize thePDF version of this tip sheetwith your contact information.
English / Spanish French / Chinese
Many of those factors are completely dependent upon your cat's size, activity level, and preferences. Another factor to be considered is the environment in which your cat spends her time. Although we can't guarantee your cat's enthusiasm or her safety with any specific toy, we can offer the following guidelines.
Be Cautious
The things that are usually the most attractive to cats are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Cat-proof your home by removing string, ribbon, yarn, rubber bands, plastic milk jug rings, paper clips, pins, needles, dental floss, and anything else that could be ingested. All of these items are dangerous, no matter how cute your cat may appear when she's playing with them.
Avoid or alter any toys that aren't "cat-proof" by removing ribbons, feathers, strings, eyes, or other small parts that could be chewed and ingested.
Soft toys should be machine washable. Look for stuffed toys that are labeled as safe for children under three years of age and that don't contain any dangerous fillings. Problem fillings include things like nutshells and polystyrene beads. Also, rigid toys are not as attractive to cats.

cat food

Cat food Reviewers recommend Natural Balance Ultra Formula more often than any other canned cat food and say it's worth the extra money. Because Natural Balance offers more meat (chicken, duck and salmon), less by-products and grains and a high nutritional value, experts say cats will need less of it, which makes the daily cost of using Natural Balance about the same as that for a mid-priced canned cat food. One expert (who is a staunch advocate of a raw-meat diet for cats) says that Natural Balance's 19 percent carbohydrate content is too high. Owner reviews, which are mostly positive, focus on whether cats seem to like the taste rather than how healthy Natural Balance is. If you don't want to spend so much, Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care Indoor Adult Cat Chicken and Rice (*est. 80¢ per 5.5-ounce can) also gets good reviews.
None of the reviews we found use formal testing; most evaluate the contents of cat food or focus on which food their cats seem to like. About.com's Franny Syufy tests a wide variety of quality cat foods on her cats. CatInfo.org and the Ask Susan Peters blog, while hypercritical of most commercial brands, teach buyers how to evaluate labels effectively. Owner reviews at OnlyNaturalPet.com, Petco.com and Amazon.com almost always award perfect scores for Natural Balance, and most other cat foods, as well.

Pet cats

Pet cats

Over the last thousands of years, cats have pretty much handled their breeding themselves. In the beginning, they were used for one purpose - hunting and killing rodents. As the years progressed, we began to breed cats more to our liking. Now days, there are several different breeds of cats - which you can tell if you look closely.
The look of the cat is the easiest way to tell what breed he or she may be. Some people choose to go by color, although color isn't as easy to identify. Different breeds of cats have different looks, such as the Siamese and Persian cats. Siamese cats are almost always black, and easy to identify by their color and their eyes. Persian cats on the other hand, are easily identified by their body type and their hair.
Feline diabetes
Cats are one of the most popular pets in North America. They are loving pets, capable of providing you years of companionship. Like other pets, cats can sometimes get sick. There are several different types of ailments that cats can get, one of which is feline diabetes. Feline diabetes is a serious disease, although it can be treated by a veterinarian.
Before you give your cat his insulin shot, you should always make sure that he has some food first. If he hasn't eaten and you give him a shot anyway, he could end up with a hypoglycemic shock. This can also occur from too much insulin as well. A hypo can be really dangerous, and should be avoided at all costs. If your cat gets a hypoglycemic shock and you aren't around, he may end up dying.
Cats and ring worms
With cats, there is a certain type of fungi known as M Canis that is found with nearly 95% of all ringworm cases. Normally, cats will get the ringworm disease from contaminated objects like bedding, clippers, or another animal that already has the disease. If there are animals in your home or around your house that have the ringworm disease, your cat could very easily contract it this way.
The most common symptoms of ringworm in cats are rough or broken hairs, or hair loss around the head or the paws. Ringworm can easily be identified by a patch of scaly skin on the body that appears itchy and inflamed. There will also be broken hairs around the patch of scaly skin. This area is very sensitive, and you should never try to touch it, as it will hurt your cat.

cat care

cat care
The First Rule is "Know Your Cat"
I can't stress too much the importance of knowing your cat thoroughly. Through daily observation, and through your petting sessions (during which you'll learn the normal "feel" of your cat's body), learn all about your cat's normal physical condition. By learning the "normal," you'll be able to spot more easily when your cat is "out of whack." Observe the following routines of your cat:His Eating HabitsDoes he wolf his food in one sitting, or does he "graze" all day? A sudden lack of appetite should be cause for concern, particularly when combined with other symptoms. His Elimination HabitsBecome familiar with the size, color, consistency, and odor of your cat's feces. Note the color and amount of his normal urine output, and how often he urinates normally. Diarrhea, constipation, or straining to urinate are all red flags that your cat needs to bee seen by your veterinarian. His Normal GaitA cat normally walks with a purposeful stride, in measured paces. Changes in a cat's walking style can signify an injury or arthritis, and a veterinarian can help. ActivityIs your cat always ready for play? Is he normally energetic, e.g., running instead of walking from one place to another. Cats normally become less active as they age, but even a senior cat should play when presented with an interactive toy. Sudden changes in your cat's activity level can signal an injury, lethargy, or depression, all of which are symptoms that should take you to the vet. Grooming HabitsCats are normally fastidious creatures, and will spend a large part of their waking hours grooming themselves. Failure to groom regularly, resulting in a greasy, matted, unkempt coat, can be caused by arthritis or depression, among other causes, and is a signal the cat needs help. On the other side of the coin, a cat that suddenly starts grooming one particular area excessively, may suffer a skin irritation, caused by fleas, mites, or the grooming itself, and should be seen by a veterinarian. His SociabilityAlthough cats have a reputation for independence, most cats are very sociable with the other occupants of their home, both human and four-legged. A previously social cat who suddenly starts huddling in a corner has problems, either physical or emotional, and needs professional help. Behavioral ChangesThe classic example is a cat that suddenly starts urinating outside the litter box. Provided the box is clean, and there are no recent environmental changes (new cat, new baby, change of residence), inappropriate urination is often a symptom of a lower urinary tract blockage or infection, both very serious conditions. He should be seen by a professional, without delay.
